Lorena was a girl with sad eyes and distant thoughts.
Orphaned by her mother and father, Lorena was brought to Paris to live with and serve the Durand family.
Lorena charmed Mrs. Durand because of her spontaneous and apparent kindness and gentleness.
The girl knew how to do everything she was asked to do, and strove to please her bosses’ requests.
In the same neighborhood lived a lady named Olivia, who had long been a neighbor of the Durand couple.
We can’t explain why, but Mrs. Olivia was very angry with the little girl. The poor thing was exposed to all sorts of dares from her.
One day, Lorena was walking home and was surprised by Olivia, who was coming towards her with a broom in her hand and trying to hit her.
Think of a scared little girl. That was when Lorena saw Mrs. Olivia with a broom in her hand, screaming and running after her.
The girl ran to ring the doorbell. But the bell cord had been cut, and she couldn’t reach it because she wasn’t tall enough. However, to her surprise, the doorbell rang on its own! Luckily, someone inside the house opened the door just in time for Lorena to get in safe and sound.
The girl didn’t realize how much help she had received. From then on, the doorbell never stopped ringing. It happened from time to time, day and night, and when they went to look, no one was there.
The family even called the police to investigate, because they thought it was a prank from the neighbors.
The Durand couple decided to follow the advice of friends and move Lorena away, taking her to live with friends in the countryside. Since then, the doorbell has never rung again.
Allan Kardec told the story in the Spiritist Review of January 1858. Kardec himself suggests that one possible cause of the mysterious sound of the bell is the action of a Spirit to protect the girl to avoid even more dangerous situations and thus force her to leave that place. That’s what really happened because her employers sent her to another location.
